Roger Thomas

Roger Thomas was born in Cardiff, Wales in 1945. In 1968, he obtained an Honours Degree in Turkish from the School of Oriental and African Studies of London University after which he joined the Foreign Office. His first overseas post was to the British Embassy in Cairo (1971-1974) followed by UK Representation to the EC in Brussels (1974-1978). There followed a three-year posting to Ankara as British Consul. In 1982 Mr Thomas was posted back to London. In 1986 he started an eight year period of living in Germany, first in Frankfurt and later (1990) in Stuttgart as British Consul General. In 1993 he returned to London where he worked in the Disarmament Department of the Foreign Office. He was then appointed as British Ambassador at Baku, Azerbaijan (1997-2000). In July 2001, he took up his post as British Consul General in San Francisco.
